The Hair Under Your Wig & Beyond

The Hair Under Your Wig & Beyond

As a professional stylist, one of my main priorities is the health and condition of my clients’ hair. Half of my salon services consist of protective styles, but I provide my clientele with a to-do list to care for their hair extensions and their natural hair. I am often asked a barrage of questions when clients encounter issues with their natural hair growth. Believe it or not, one of the common taboos is that clients are not shampooing their hair often enough. They are usually going a month between shampoos. They want to know what products can promote hair growth, and my first suggestion is to simply shampoo your hair more often. There are so many hair myths and Old Wive’s Tales floating around that sometimes it’s nice to know the basics. I have listed a few more tips from The American Academy of Dermatology.
To help keep Black hair healthy, dermatologists recommend the following tips:
  • Wash your hair once a week or every other week. This will help prevent build-up of hair care products, which can be drying to the hair.
  • Use conditioner. Use conditioner every time you wash your hair. Be sure to coat the ends of the hair with conditioner, as the ends are the oldest and most fragile part of your hair.
  • Use a hot oil treatment twice a month. This adds additional moisture and elasticity to your hair.
*Tips are from the American Academy of Dermatology Association
